Gus Kenworthy Wins Aspen/Snowmass Open Superpipe
The Aspen/Snowmass Open is one of the few remaining, large open events in the world, probably 2nd only to the European Freeskiing Open in Laax. Every year it seems like less and less big names come to Aspen to compete, but more and more young names get to create names for themselves here, so it’s a nice trade off. And an am that everyone has been watching, Gus Kenworthy, made quite a name for himself here, by winning the Superpipe.
The site where not two weeks ago, the X Games competition went down, Gus toppled the field to take first and boost himself form the dregs of the list to 19th place in the pipe standings. 2nd place went to Walter Wood who knows sits in 12th overall and 3rd place went to Byron Wells who is craving a name for himself. Wells currently sits in 18th place on the AFP list.
Some other names that cracked the list are: Beau James Wells (37th), Torin Yater-Wallace (34th) Patrick Baskins (32nd), Brian Kish (30th), and Marshall Lacroix (29th). For each of these guys, this was their first event of the year to get some points on the AFP list, so hopefully they can move up some more spots as the year goes on.
On the women’s side of things, the only “big” name at the event was Anais Caradeux, who overtook the 2nd spot on the AFP list from Sarah Burke, who now sits in 3rd.
The top end of the list remains untouched, with Jossi Wells, Simon Dumont and Xavier Bertoni still hold the top three spots, receptively. Next up, the European Freeskiing Open. With big points and big names, we’ll probably see some ranks being shifted.
