Mike Riddle Wins Winter Dew Tour Superpipe
With the passing of the Winter Dew Tour stop in Breckenridge, that marks the official start to the competition season [although the technical start was the NZ Open and NZ Games this fall]. After a grueling qualifier and semi-finals stage, where we saw big names like Peter Olenick, Tucker Perkins and AJ Kemppainen fail to move on for one reason or another.
The Breck Winter Dew Tour is unique among Dew Tour stops as it contains an open qualifier, which is a chance for unknowns (and pros alike) to earn a spot into the prelims. As a side note, it’s also a chance for the top qualifiers to earn some extra points, padding their early AFP rankings. David Wise, Matt Duhamel, Walter Wood, and other not only earned themselves spots in the big show, but added picked up some points in the process.
But the big show on Sat. night is the talk of the town. Mike Riddle, who had a bit of a rough season last year, stood poised and corralled the pipe, emerging victorious, which moves him currently into 3rd place in the AFP standings. Jossi Wells, who is coming off of a tough last season as well used his signature style and two clean runs to take silver, which bumped him into 2nd place in the AFP standings as well. 3rd place at Breckenridge went to reigning X Games gold medalist Xavier Bertoni, giving him enough points for 3rd place.
4th, 5th and 5th at Breck went to Kevin Rolland, Justin Dorey and Simon Dumont — respectively — pushing them to 15th, 17th and 21st, respectively, in the AFP standings. David Wise, who injured himself during his run, has accumulated enough points from NZ and the open qualifier to sit atop the AFP standings, but with the injury effectively ending his season, we probably won’t see young David on top of the AFP for long. After this Dew, we also see relative newcomer Thomas Krief in 6th place, Matt Duhamel in 7th, Walter Wood in 8th and Matt Margetts in 9th, in the overall AFP pipe standings.
