Past Rankings

The means of determining these points was purely hypothetical, since no part of this system was in place last year when these events were taking place, nor did any of the athletes know it would happen.

The system we used to create the points is based on each event’s overall quality and the level of competition there. Course construction prize money, media exposure, and event production weigh in considerably, but the field depth is what carries the most weight. All of these events were looked at and discussed by a large group of people from different sides of the industry, and we assigned a point value to each event. Each point value had a breakdown for 1st through 10th place….for instance, 1st = 1000 pts, 2nd = 800, 3rd = 600, etc. Results were inserted into these lists, so each rider who finished in the top 10 at an event last year had a record of all their points.

We then selected only the top 3 or 4 (depending on the discipline) results for each rider, and added them together to determine overall standings. That way, the rider who happened to go to every event, wasn’t the one who was at the top of the list.

Future point calculations will be similar, but will be a little bit more involved. Please see the current point standings page for that information.
